Changes in the Red Blood Cell Uptake of I^(131)-T_(3) throughout the Menstrual Cycle, In Pregnancy and at Delivery

Abstract
The red blood cell uptake of I31-T 3 was measured by the Hamolsky-Freedberg method in 103 cases of normal pregnancy, 14 cases of non-pregnant women with normal menstrual cycles, 62 cases before and after, deliveries and 62 cases of newborn infants immediately after¢¥ deliveries, and a total of 57 healthy women in the. ages 24 44 as a control group. The major findings from this study can be outlined as follows:
1) The red blood cell uptake of I131-T3 in the control group averaged .14, 4%zb 2.89 ranging from 9.2% to 1.9.7%
2): During a menstrual cycle, the. uptake tended to increase from postmenstrual_ period, reaching a; peak at the ovulation penod, and decreasing thereafter.,
3) In normal pregnancy, the utake was 9.6%+ 1.77 ranging from, 6.4% to 14..6%, being significantly, lower, than the non-pregnant control` group.
4) The mean uptake value was significantly lower in the 2nd trimester, of pregnancy than in, the 1st and 3rd trimesters. , The decrease: was : most apparent at the 6th and 7th months of gestation.
5) No significant -differences were observed between the values obtained before and after deliveries There were also no noticeable differences between the values of the mother and newborn, infant.
